“Joy is a universal language that transcends all barriers.”
First place: Ashley Zimmerman
Category: Intercultural Moments
Description: Even though we may speak different languages, there are universal things that can help us overcome those language barriers and connect with each other - especially everyday emotions such as joy, and happiness.
Honourable mention: Holly Granken
Title of photo: Paper Cranes
Category: Intercultural Moments
Description: The photo was taken at the Fushimi Inari Shrine in Kyoto, Japan. The shrine is dedicated to Inari, the Shinto god of Rice, and is made up of thousands of "Torii gates" that go as far back as the 8th century, with the names of individuals/businesses inscribed upon the monuments. It’s amazing to hike through the shrine and learn more about Japanese culture through the history of shrines built around the mountain (that the shrine is on). It is also interesting to learn about where the Japanese written language system originated from (i.e. Chinese characters) from the language script used to write the donor names on older pillars (i.e. Referred to today as "Kanji").

“Fiction reveals truths that reality obscures.”
First Place: Jacqueline Shi
Category: Literature as Inspiration
Description: The reflection in this photograph shows the rich and powerful world that literature produces. The literature-world often appears more realistic than reality itself, which can reveal hidden truths in our everyday lives.
Honourable Mention: Aranyah Shanker
Name of photo: My Sanctuary, My Home
Category: Literature as Inspiration
Description: “I’ll love you forever, I’ll like you for always, As long as I’m living my baby you’ll be.”- Love You Forever, Robert Munsch. Doesn’t matter where in the world you end up, the people you choose to be your family will forever be your home. Your safety net, your sanctuary. This picture from my travels to Malaysia and India, reminded me of the books I read in my childhood, where the messages were always clear and poetic - nothing more needed to be said! Definitely brought a smile to my face!
Portraits of Languages Category
Simply an excuse to think about language and communication...but visually.
“The Power of a High Five.”
First Place: Natasha Ana-Gabriela Coakley
Category: Portraits of Language
Description: Not supplied (photo taken in Cuncani, Peru)
Honourable Mention: Gavin Krohman
Title of photo: Visuals
Category: Portraits of Language
Description: It baffles me when people say street art isn’t real ‘art’. It is a form of visual communication, no different than a painting or a photograph. It tells a story and allows for creative expression. Unlike most art in galleries, street art isn’t typically commercialized either. Anyone who walks by a piece can interpret it in their own way and doesn’t have to pay a cent to see it.- Melbourne, Australia

Honourable Mention: Cassandra Lena Kell-Cattrysse
Title of photo: Movie Moments
Category: Study Abroad
Description: “Within the first few weeks of being in Melbourne, I joined a group of other international students at the Queen Victoria Market. Under the fairly lights, listening to local music, browsing the shops, and enjoying multicultural food- this market is made for the movies. Catching wind of some folk music I grabbed the hand of my friend, after knowing each other for only two weeks. We danced barefoot at the front of the crowd. Alive, and present- "Here and now." Now months later, this new friend has become one of the most influential people in my life, and we continue to talk every day, from opposite ends of the earth.”
Canadian fauna
First Place: Marius Humeau
Category: Study Abroad
Description: We are three European exchange students on our way to Killarney Provincial Park during reading week. We embarked on our journey to Algonquin National Park, driving on stunning Canadian roads. Passers-by got the chance to see some unusual fauna. Lucky them! Killarney is a great place to hike and camp, and this picture is a great representation of our week.
People’s Choice
“Easter Sunrise Scripture Reading.”
Tess Shoemaker
Description: The Bible is the inspired Word of God that both fuels our passion and inspiration for seeking and finding truth.
