Este meme está inspirado en la polémica reciente frente a las quejas presentadas por algunos usuarios en Estados Unidos que apelan a que la presentación de Jennifer López y Shakira en el Super Bowl tuvo contenido subido de tono y lo han calificado de un show “pornográfico”. Muchas de las quejas están basadas en que el show del medio tiempo es visualizado por familias enteras en Estados Unidos y que la presentación de estas dos artistas latinoamericanas no era apta para niños. Las quejas también están dirigidas al movimiento “Me Too” y a las medidas en contra de la trata de blancas, pues quienes presentaron estas quejas consideran que el show impide que las mujeres sean vistas como solo a partir de la sexualización de su cuerpo. Además, las quejas también están enfocadas al uso del pole dance por parte de Jennifer López. En este punto de la polémica, los usuarios inconformes olvidan la importancia del movimiento en latino en Estados Unidos y de esta presentación, pues allí estuvo presente ritmos latinos representativos de la cultura latina, elementos que están muy lejos de tener contenido “pornográfico”.
This meme is inspired in how food is an important element of immigrants’ identity as Gloria Anzaldúa states in her article How to Tame a Wild Tongue. Anzaldua states that “there are more subtle ways that we internalize identification, especially in the forms of images and emotions. For me food and certain smells are tied to my identity, to my homeland” (42). In her personal experience, she has memories about how her siblings’ used to cook their best dishes as fajitas and spicy menudo, and how she “salivates” because of her mom’s hot tamales that she would be eating if she were in her home. The relation and memories that Anzaldua has with her native food, are very positive. In this meme, Drake’s famous photos were used to compare Latin American immigrants’ attitude towards some the dishes that they find when decide to come to Canada or United States (poutine, Taco Bell tacos and Mc Donald’s hamburgers), and their attitudes towards some Latin American dishes (empanadas, ceviche, tacos and chivito). This meme does not try to be a negative generalization about food in United States or Canada, or idealized typical food. However, this meme tries to generate an emotional effect in those whose can feel identified with this feeling of missing homeland food. In fact, this meme can be thought with dishes of different continents as Africa, Asia or Europe. At the same time, Spanglish is used on the text to give more context to other people that are not from Latin America and also, in way to call to assimilation that, as Anzaldúa mentions in her article, immigration had brought different changes to Spanish language and it deserves to be mentioned.
